Performance appraisal can be defined as the process of identifying, evaluating, and developing the work performance of an employee to guide/achieve the goals & objectives of the organization. this is a part of an organization’s overall performance management system. In addition, the appraisals benefit employees by providing them with recognition, benefits, feedback, career guidance, and development.

Proper evaluation system to pave the path to have a regular meeting between the manager and the staff member to discuss work performance in relation to

Effective performance appraisal relies on clear performance standards being established and discussed with the relevant employee in a timely manner. Maintaining these standards appraisal involves:

 Noticing the employee's work behavior and results, and comparing them against the established standards

Evaluating job performance and the employee's development potential

Providing feedback to the employee

Acting on the results of the appraisal process, for example through promotion, reward, and recognition, counseling, training, or in some cases termination.

 

If we have observed unsatisfactory performance from an employee, it’s recommended to act swiftly to address these performance lapses as they arise instead of leaving them to address in the formal appraisal process which may take place months after the underperformance is first noticed. This will provide an opportunity and room for the employee to adjust or to take corrective measures to improve their performance before the formal performance appraisal process is conducted.
